What is the role of researchers and product managers in these kind of companies? The 'sitting with customers' is something all of the three legs of the stool (design, product, tech) should be able to do together.
It's a good question! It seems like there's a couple of ways people do it:
* design / product / eng treat the FDE as the end customer
* the FDE has a corresponding partner (often called the deployment strategist) who plays the role that a product or design person would. They think through requirements, range of solutions, define the problem better, etc.
This feels like a mistake to assume a FDE would be an end customer. Why would you not use a doctor as your end customer if you're designing for doctors? And honestly, unless a deployment strategist has the training that a product manager or designer has, why would a deployment strategist be the right person?
Both of these feel like solutions that aren't actually solving problems and create more risk. I think there is a role to incorporate AI and other ways to improve how we work; I also am not surprise to see how many products and teams fail. If we don't actually design WITH our users, we're not building product properly.
